Mobb Deep Rapper Prodigy Dies At 42

Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy, who just performed at this year’s Summer Jame, dies at 42 years old after being hospitalized for complications caused by a very strange sickle cell disease.

“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary N.Y. rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis,” a statement from the group’s representative read according to the Los Angeles Times.

“As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”

Born in Hempstead, N.Y., Prodigy, also known as Albert Johnson, had deep music connections within his family. His mother was with a 60s girl group and the father was a jazz saxophonist. Prodigy was part of the icon hip-hop duo, Mobb Deep. They have some of the most classic rap songs that most people listen to on streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music. It’s a shame to see one of the old school rappers not be part of the hip-hop community anymore.
