Hidden Gems Review: Attack the Block

Attack the Block is a 2011 British comedy sci fi movie that stars John Boyega, Jodie Whitaker and Nick Frost. It’s by the producers who did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. The plot centers on a teenage gang who have to defend themselves from predatory aliens in south London during Guy Fawkes Night.

The film opens up with Moses (Boyega) and his gang about to mugged Nurse Samantha (Whitaker) when a meteorite crash in a car nearby. The gang finds a small creature, which they quickly kill. But then other meteorites fall nearby, the same creatures but bigger and deadlier. The creatures start invading their apartment complex, making the kids arm themselves and go for help as they tried to defend their home.

Now, this film is nearly unknown. I only heard about it on a YouTube channel and the fact that this was one of John Boyega’s first movies. Its kinda obvious that it’s from the guys that did “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun of the Dead,” with them using nick frost again and some old jokes. What really grabbed me were the aliens, these are aliens we never saw before. They are huge, like gorillas. They are black and furry and I mean really black/ I have to put the light screen so high on my TV just to see them. The only way you can really see them is by their teeth, which are bluish-green and they glow. The only complaint I have about them is that they shriek; I was expecting a roar.

Now, critics liked it and so did fans. This has gained cult status. I do believe everyone should give this flick a watch, not just for baby Boyega, but also for the aliens, who are like ones you have never seen before. The plot is also interesting since we barely see sci-fi movies done in the projects before.
