R/place began on April 1st, 2017 and was created to be a fun social experiment in which anyone could participate. To begin with, r/place began as a subreddit with a 1000px by 1000px blank canvas. Within this blank canvas, people could change the color of a single pixel from a selection of 16 colors every 5 minutes. At first, people would randomly place a color down and leave but soon after people began organizing creating pixel art trying to leave their mark on the canvas. Pretty soon images of characters, symbols, flags, and logos appeared all over the canvas. However, a new power appeared in the bottom right corner, the blue corner quickly spread across the canvas covering other peoples artwork.
It seemed that the canvas was going to be completely covered by the blue corner but then it suddenly stopped and logos and characters appeared on top of the blue corner. Afterward many subreddits created alliances to protect their images. All seemed well then came the void, a subreddit devoted to erasing everyone else artwork. They would randomly appear covering a certain area with just a black void. Many subreddits fell to the void but many also stood their ground and by the end of the 72-hour event hundreds of groups had left their mark throughout the canvas.
R/place will be remembered for uniting over a million people to create such an interesting and varied piece of art. Many groups had left their own mark on the experiment and many hope for a new canvas to open so we can all do it again.
