LeBron James stands by his promise to the kids of Akron, Ohio.
On February 16th in Charlotte, North Carolina, media outlets from all over the world gathered to get exclusive remarks and interviews from prominent players during the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend. While fans waited in anticipation of the Sunday night All-Star Game with Team Giannis vs Team LeBron, many players spoke to the press about their excitement and All-Star experience thus far. Hamidou Diallo (winner of the 2019 dunk contest) expressed his excitement about being in the NBA and playing during All-Star Weekend stating:
“When I was a kid, I didn’t know I would be playing in the NBA, I just kept grinding and kept working and here I am today.”
Others spoke about their favorite memories from past All-Star Weekends, and even chimed in on their support of Kaepernick. John Collins in particular saying, “I feel like all the football players should be on board and support what he’s doing,” he went on to say, “I definitely support it, even though I’m in another sport but Im behind it and I feel like the NFL and the players should be behind it too.”
NBA Vets like Kemba Walker spoke on their favorite pastimes, accounting Dwyane Wade’s 2006 Championship win with the Miami Heat as a standout moment.
But it was non other than LeBron James who really shined during All-Star Media Day, giving us an exclusive take on his promise to the kids of his hometown of Akron, Ohio. We asked James: For the kids in Akron, Ohio who don’t have your skillset but aspire to be in your position, what is the best advice you have for them? LeBron’s response was thorough, heartfelt and proved even more why he is indeed the King on and off the court:
“I don’t know who will be able to be a NBA player or professional athlete but more, every kid has a dream and every kid has THAT! And what that is, they have to tap into that, so for me to be a part of Akron and know that I’m giving my kids an opportunity to tap into whatever THAT is…it means so much to me!”
