Back in 2017, Hood By Air announced a brief hiatus, and come yesterday, founder Shayne Oliver confirmed that the hiatus is over. As reported by Interview Magazine, Kanye West interviewed Shayne Oliver in which he inquired about its resurgence, and expressed his enthusiasm for it.
Kanye asked why he was “in hibernation” to which Shayne gave a deep response to:
“It was getting to a point where I felt like I was being held to an extreme level. Hood By Air had these emotions and this ethos that I respect, and I wanted to continue respecting that as much as possible. Am I meant to constantly be working on something without knowing exactly what I’m aiming toward? I didn’t really feel like it was healthy. I felt like I needed time to learn a bit about myself. That’s really why I took a break.”
“Having the blessing or opportunity to be a creative should always be therapeutic, not stressful. I feel like people really need to see the McQueen documentary to understand the level of pressure that is put on creatives when we’re forced to put out things that we don’t believe in.”
The refreshing interview between two people who live their visions through their purpose is an excellent read, and a great introduction to the resurgence of Hood By Air. It’s a black owned brand that cuts the bullshit. It’s described as having had “perfected the union of streetwear and high fashion, and in doing so, helped create the global merchandising blueprint for menswear today.”
While no exact date, or process has been provided for the relaunch, we patiently await what Shayne Oliver delivers to the public, as his private creativity is respected.
