Michael B Jordan’s series Raising Dion has officially been canceled by Netflix after the conclusion of its second season. The superstar actor turned producer for the coming of age story based around Dion a young African American boy who’s learning to use his newfound superpowers.
While Michael B Jordan’s acting role in the show is limited to that of a recurring character he once again takes a foray into the world of producing as with his previous projects such as Just mercy and a Journal for Jordan it shines a light on racial and social issues that affect the most vulnerable and marginalized of society while making the most of Jordan’s star power to bring an audience and highlight new young talent.
Michael B Jordan’s project is based on a comic of the same name by Dennis Liu features a young and diverse cast and follows the young superhero in waiting Dion played by Ja’Siah Young and his mother Nicole played by Alisha Wainwright as she seeks to protect from those who would misuse his powers and look for their origins all whilst navigating the tricky waters of raising a child alone.
While Netflix has remained tight-lipped on the canceling of Jordan’s project with the current financial troubles Netflix is currently experiencing it’s hardly surprising cuts are being made. The loss of a show like Raising Dion however especially one that has the star power of Michael B Jordan is somewhat shocking due to the need for increased diversity and representation it’s sad to see a show that has all that and more go. More shows like Raising Dion are surely needed to show aspirational role models for people like Esperanza who suffers from osteoporosis and Alisha the courageous single mother just trying to do right with her son in a world that is all too hostile to people like her.
It remains to be seen if fan backlash or a positive critic reception will force Netflix into a u-turn one thing is for sure Raising Dion will remain a cinematic gem.
