For someone who started as a battle rapper, Meek Mill has become a maven in the music industry. Thanks to his hit songs, he has topped the music charts again and again.
However, beyond the mic, his venture into entrepreneurship has also been largely successful. This has been a demonstration of his determination to be successful in different avenues combined with his remarkable knack for business.
Meek Mill’s Business Acumen: His Music Career
Robert Rihmeek Williams, professionally known as Meek Mill, began his career by competing in rap battles and producing four mixtapes with his rap group Bloodhounz before eventually becoming a solo artist in 2006. Two years later, he produced three solo mixtapes, which formed the foundation of his music career.
In 2009, he rose to stardom after releasing his fourth solo mixtape, “Flamers 2: Hottest in tha City.” Charles “Charlie Mack “Alston, the boss of 215 Aphillyated Records, was captivated by his unique vocals and signed Meek Mill to the company.
As soon as his career took flight, he got on the bad side of the law and had a brief stint in jail. Despite this setback, Meek Mill could not be deterred from musical success. He went ahead to release mixtapes, and collaborated with A-list stars.
Dreams and Nightmares: Meek Mill’s Big Break
2011 was a career-defining year for Meek Mills, with some of his singles peaking on music billboards. “Ima Boss,” his most successful single, then topped the chart at No. 51 on Billboard 100. Following this, the Philadelphia-born rapper released the first mixtape from his “Dreamchasers” series, which was widely acclaimed. Not resting on his oars, Meek Mill expanded his music portfolio, releasing a sequel to his “Dreamchasers” series. The sequel spawned 1.5 million downloads within 6 hours of its launch.
His career took a new turn when he joined Roc Nation and released his debut studio album, “Dream and Nightmares.” The album soared at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard chart with numerous sales of copies. Even the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it Gold.
Dream Chasers Record: His Foray into Entrepreneurship
After many years of working under different record labels, Meek Mill donned his business acumen when began his record label. Dream Chasers Record was launched in 2012. The label imprint was culled from the mixtape series “Dreamchasers.” Since the launch, he’s signed artists like Louis V. Gutta, and Omelly, among others.
In 2019, he collaborated with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, redefining the label’s focus on talent acquisition, marketing, and creative strategy. Shortly after, Meek delved into corporate ownership, becoming a co-owner at Lids, a sports apparel retailer.
He also signed a business deal with WME, a talent agency, in 2022 after his split from Jay-Z.
Beyond the music business, Meek also ventured into tech. He invested in various startups, one of them notably being the social media platform Lids.
Meek's transition from music to entrepreneurship is one for the books. Starting as an obscure rapper to owning a record label and forming partnerships, Meek has become a force to reckon with.
He continues to display a keen eye for lucrative opportunities as he keeps signing business deals and advocating for justice.
