Algee Smith is a movie star from the Disney stable, who’s proving his prowess in both acting and singing. He was born in Michigan, but he moved with his parents to Atlanta at the age of 8. The city's rich musical culture influenced him to record his first rap song when he was nine years old. He spent most of his childhood years singing in church, and it was during his twenties that he released his EP "Listen."
Before the release of his EP, Smith had also been featured in different movies and TV shows, showcasing his versatility as a musician and actor.
The Musical Side
Algee Smith had dreams of pursuing a career in music from a young age. By the time he was 9 years old, he joined his local church choir and even recorded his first rap song. In his teenage years, he put more effort into perfecting his acting skills. However, in his early twenties, he started to write and produce music in addition to acting.
Before working on his first single in 2013, he knew he wanted to create a song that connected with his followers. So, he reached out to his fans on social media and asked about the vibe of a song and lyrics that would resonate with them. He took in the suggestion he received and created a powerful masterpiece, "She Say." Four years later, he compiled a six-song EP, "Listen," followed by the 2020 single "Pain Away."
The Journey of Algee's Career in Film
Algee stepped into the acting scene in 2012 after he was featured on the Nickelodeon television show How to Rock. In the same year, he was a guest cast member on the Lifetime drama series Army Wives. He made his big screen debut in 2014 in the science fiction movie Earth to Echo before being cast for a recurring role on the US Network drama Complications. His big break in acting came in 2017 after he landed a role in the BET musical drama show The New Edition Story, in which he played Ralph Tresvant.
Algee's father had worked with Tresvant for a few years, and coaching him for the role helped him get into character. As the lead character on the show, Smith did a great job matching Ralph while showcasing his musical ability at the same time. Smith was also featured in the movie Detroit, where he played as a lead singer of a professional R&B music group.
He was not only featured as a cast member, but also his song was on the film's soundtrack. His acting talent also earned him a nomination as an Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards. Some of the most recent television shows he has been featured in include Judas and the Black Messiah and Shooting Stars.
Navigating Between Music and Acting
Being a good actor and singer isn't a specialty that most people excel in, but it's an art that Algee Smith has mastered. Growing up, Smith wanted to pursue a music career. When his parents noticed his passion for music, they let him sing in the church choir.
While he loved to be part of the church choir, it wasn't until his young adulthood years that he decided to pursue music professionally. In his teenage years, he played different roles in children's television shows, which helped him get better roles later in his career.
