His features on Anderson .Paak’s “Come Home” and Killer Mike’s “Scientists & Engineers” sent him home with three more Grammys, bringing his total to nine wins. How deep is OutKast’s impact on the rap game?

André 3000 played off of his counterpart Big Boi perfectly. Their contrast in styles and sounds worked effortlessly to create the OutKast flow that we all know and love. While Big Boi came in with structured, rhythm-dominant technical raps, 3 Stacks brought his fluid unpredicality to the table. Big Boi’s fashion was even more tailored to classic southern style, while André 3000’s was much more eclectic and otherworldly.

By 1992, OutKast had attracted the attention of L.A. Reid and Babyface, who signed them to LaFace Records. They made history as the label’s first hip-hop act, and they debuted with their hit “Player’s Ball” in 1993. Their platinum debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, was an instant success and helped define the southern rap sound.

In an era dominated by the West Coast-East Coast hip-hop feud, OutKast proved that “the South got something to say.” Their second and third albums, ATLiens and Aquemini, pushed the envelope further and propelled the duo higher. Both albums went double platinum and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

The duo’s fourth studio album, Stankonia, had a more mainstream sound, which worked highly in their favor. The quadruple platinum album earned OutKast their first two Grammy Awards and a No. 1 hit for “Ms. Jackson” in 2002. They returned to the Grammys the next year and found their third in Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group for the single “The Whole World” off their 2001 compilation album.

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is the duo’s fifth and most successful album. The project is a double album with Speakerboxxx representing Big Boi’s soulful southern swag and The Love Below featuring André 3000’s adventurous jazzy abstractness. The album has been certified 13x platinum and won the duo their fourth, fifth, and sixth Grammys. “Hey Ya!” won Best Urban/Alternative Performance, while the double album won Best Rap Album and Album of the Year.

Their sixth and final album together, Idlewild, performed just as well as their earlier projects. The musical film and album came out to be one of hip-hop’s finest closing acts. It went platinum and stood atop Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts upon its debut.
