There is no denying that ScHoolboy Q and Mac Miller had a close relationship – but did Mac write one of ScHoolboy’s albums?
For years, fans have been buzzing with speculation about the involvement the late rapper had in the production of Oxymoron, with some questioning if Mac was a ghostwriter for the project.
Mac had an undeniable impact on hip-hop. The rapper dropped five studio albums before his death while a sixth was released posthumously.
Amid his rise to fame, Mac was battling substance abuse. The “Good News” MC was found dead in his Los Angeles area home in September 2018 and his death sent shockwaves across the music industry. A year later, ScHoolboy opened up about his friend’s passing, which he said was hard to believe.
“To this day I don't understand how I can't call my n---a no more," he said during an interview with Charlamagne Tha God. "Losing a soul to gangbanging is way different than losing a friend that's like an innocent kid — super pure."
While it’s clear that Mac and ScHoolboy were comrades, the extent of Miller's contribution to ScHoolboy’s career is still in question. Let’s break down the speculation surrounding this rumor and explore the relationship between the two rappers.
Did Mac Miller write ScHoolboy Q’s album? Debunking the rumors.
Fans have taken to Reddit to speculate about Mac’s involvement with ScHoolboy’s 2014 project, Oxymoron, but they seem to be mistaken. Buzz about Mac and ScHoolboy resurfaced after a Reddit user uncovered an exchange between the rappers on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I wrote @ScHoolBoyQ album. I can’t keep it a secret anymore. I wrote all the hooks and bridges,” Mac reportedly tweeted. To which ScHoolboy responded, “@MacMiller so [you're] admitting you use the n-word?”
On the surface, the online exchange can be easily misinterpreted. However, fans of Mac and ScHoolboy are familiar with the pair’s playful friendship.
“Definitely a joke, Q's response is too funny,” one person wrote, while another added, “Him and Q were just clowns together. I wouldn’t think of this as being even remotely serious.”
Here's an inside look at Mac Miller and ScHoolboy Q’s friendship.
Mac’s death in 2018 greatly impacted his friends – particularly, ScHoolboy. When Mac came to Los Angeles to pursue a music career, he quickly formed a relationship with the “Collard Greens” rapper. Mac opened up about the pair’s collaborative efforts in an interview with Fuse TV.
"When these people are your friends, it's exciting because you're not thinking, 'Oh, this is my ScHoolboy Q song.' It shouldn't be made to fit them, it shouldn't be made to fit me. It should be us creating something that doesn't exist," Mac explained. "That's what a real good collaboration does."
For his part, ScHoolboy found it hard to even talk about Mac after his death. He broke down in tears when asked about his relationship with the “Self Care” rapper.
“Man, that's my n---a bruh. I've got memories with that n---a. I could never write a song,” ScHoolboy tearfully told Charlamagne in 2019.
