Don’t be fooled by the spotlight / But I been meetin’ my heroes / Bank account got zeros / Happiness on zero / Life moving so fast-paced / Strap up, here we go…

And just like that, LEW laid down the lyrics of his favorite song born out of the worst time of his life. From depressing relationship woes and traumatic life events to building massive platforms through partnerships with Mass Appeal, LEW sees the message in everything and sets it to music that moves you. We sat down with LEW to learn more about how his perseverance became the passion that fuels his purpose.

BLEU MAGAZINE: Congratulations on God Cried All Night. Can you tell me a little bit about the moment you knew that that was the story that you wanted to tell with this debut?

LEW: So, um, as I was writing the album, I really wanted to tell the events that made me who I am up until when I signed my deal. I wanted to kind of just get that part of my life out the way, and now I can start working on, you know, writing about the new chapter I'm in. I was just thinking about stories from my life—all the hardships I went through and all the things that got me to the record deal—and that's kind of what I was writing about.

BLEU: Awesome. Now, you describe the album as “being for anybody that’s been through shit, got some shit going on, and still became THE shit.” Is there any specific moment in your life that kind of encompasses that entire mantra?

LEW: Yeah, for sure. I got a bunch. But I think my journey in life wasn’t, like, an easy one to get to where I'm at. I feel like I had to fight for everything up until this point, even when I started music. I was really just like some short, fat, little nerdy kid in high school making beats because I just thought that would make people kind of, you know, like me and stuff. And the beats were garbage at the time >laughs<. So people were making fun of it, and I was just trying to grow into becoming an artist and a rapper. You gotta go through those hurdles of people not taking you seriously. I have stories about the depression I went through and some seriously low moments I had along the way—being cheated on, losing my apartment, my car blowing up all in the same week—but I prevailed, and that really shaped the person I became.

BLEU: You mentioned depression. What would you say was the driving force that got you through that?

LEW: I really think it was just having a strong family foundation. I'm really close to everybody in my family. Even my cousins are like siblings to me. Having that community around me, and just the way I was raised, always keeps pushing me forward, no matter what. Every day you wake up, it doesn't matter what's going on around you as long as you’re still breathing. As long as your heart's still beating, you got hope. Just keeping a positive mindset through anything, I think, is most important. The way you perceive the world is really your reality. Everybody goes through stuff. Everybody goes through a hard time, but it's really the way you see it and the way you think about it that shapes what you gain from it.

BLEU: Thanks for sharing that. And along those lines, you have some track titles that feel really raw and very personal. Which song would you say was the hardest for you to write, and why?

LEW: I'm gonna say, probably, the intro track, abandonmenT. I was in an 11-year relationship with my best friend—since I was 15—and I broke up with her to chase my dreams, you know, to focus on music. And I didn't necessarily follow through on that commitment. I didn't do what I said I was going to do completely. I made a lot of mistakes along the way and got a really big thing with abandoning people. I called it abandonmenT because I left her behind, and I struggle with it because that’s my favorite song I've ever written. I just gotta keep going, though.

Now, adding much-anticipated collaborations to the mix, LEW is excited to also have a U.S. tour in the works. “I'm collaborating with people from the UK and New York, the Bay Area. I’m just trying to touch every market right now.” And you can keep up with everything LEW touches by following on social media at @whereislew and at @whereislewcifer on TikTok.
