The beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake will go down as one of the biggest rap beefs of the year. While Drake has seemingly bowed out of the battle, Kendrick continues to apply pressure.
On July 4, the Compton rapper released the music video to his chart-topping diss track “Not Like Us,” reigniting interest in the feud. As of this writing, the clip has garnered more than 57 million views on YouTube, becoming one of Kendrick’s most popular music videos.
Kendrick filmed the "Not Like Us" video in Compton, showcasing several of the city’s famous locations. Here’s a breakdown of the spots featured in the video, which is filled with Los Angeles imagery.
Kendrick made Tam’s Burgers famous with “Not Like Us.”
A Compton staple, Tam’s Burgers, was heavily featured in Kendrick’s “Not Like Us” music video. Just days before the video was released, K-Dot was spotted interacting with fans at the popular burger spot. Kendrick’s decision to include Tam’s Burgers highlights his ongoing relationship with South LA and underscores his commitment to supporting local businesses. Since the GRAMMY-winning rapper filmed the video at the fast food restaurant, Tam’s has seen a huge increase in sales.
Manager Lauro Hernandez told TMZ that sales have increased by 40% since July 4. Additionally, the owner of the popular Compton food spot has granted Kendrick full access to the menu for his entire lifetime. “Anything he want, it’s on the house,” owner Spiro Vovos said. When asked if Drake was welcomed at Tam’s Burger, Spiro laughed before refusing to answer the question. He then doubled down on his support for Kendrick.
Compton City Hall is featured heavily in the music video.
In June, Kendrick was spotted at Compton City Hall, where he was filming the music video for "Not Like Us." The location is deeply symbolic of K-Dot’s roots and the themes present in his music. The government building served as a powerful backdrop for the video, with fans dancing to Kendrick’s tune. Kendrick’s choice of Compton City Hall reflects his continued commitment to representing his hometown and addressing the complex realities of urban life through his music.
Nickerson Gardens raised Kendrick, and he just returned the favor.
On June 22, days after Kendrick Lamar’s Ken & Friends concert, the rapper popped up in Nickerson Gardens. The housing project is heavily featured in the “Not Like Us” music video, showing Kendrick as he parties with residents. Kendrick grew up in the housing community, and he has made it his mission to help those living at Nickerson Gardens. Kendrick also hosts holiday toy drives, community events, and provides resources for residents at the location.
Kendrick went to Enterprise Park with his team.
In addition to filming at Compton City Hall, Kendrick Lamar and his crew traveled to Enterprise Park for one of the scenes featured in the “Not Like Us” music video. The greenery and urban landscape of the park provided an appealing backdrop, perfectly complementing Kendrick’s bars. Videos from the set have emerged online of Kendrick casually enjoying his time with other Compton natives as they prepare to film the popular music video.
