In addition to being a rap legend, André 3000 is a fashion icon. Since his early days as a member of the GRAMMY Award-winning duo Outkast, Andre has been dripping in the latest gear. The rapper’s fashion sense has evolved over the years. André is known for his preppy aesthetic, wacky wigs, and outlandish outfits inspired by other music greats.
“I was a fan of bands like Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, Hendrix, and other older groups,” he told Vibe (via Ray Cornelius). “They became my style icons at that age. So I just started trying to incorporate different things into my wardrobe. I felt comfortable doing it.”
However, André has since switched up his wardrobe. The flute player now opts for a more industrial look, marked by overalls and workman boots. Now, he’s launching his own clothing line alongside one of the most notable workwear designers in the fashion industry.
André 3000’s clothing line is set to change the workwear game.
According to Highsnobiety, André 3000 is gearing up for the launch of his clothing line. The outlet reports that the rapper will be partnering with Amsterdam designer Bonne Reijn, who created BONNE. This upcoming launch is proof of André’s influence on fashion, as it will blend his personal aesthetic with functional design. He is frequently seen wearing overalls, beanies, and other comfortable gear, and his clothing line will mimic these items.
Fans can anticipate a unique take on workwear that aligns with his long-standing preference for comfortable and stylish pieces. The line is expected to feature products like overalls and camo t-shirts, though André has not confirmed which items will make the cut.
There's no confirmed release date yet for André's new clothing line. However, this collection marks his first venture back into the fashion industry since his unexpected capsule collection in 2021.
André 3000 has dropped several clothing collections.
In 2012, André found himself in a pickle while trying to renew one of his trademark applications. The Outkast member was forced to utilize his trademarked intellectual properties or risk losing them altogether. To fulfill the renewal requirement, André created a capsule collection with art he created on a whim.
“According to the trademark people, in order to retain control of your trademarks, you have to actively use them,” André explained (via Complex). “The trademark office also [has] deadlines and lots of rules to defend your IP (intellectual property). So here are a few things that I hope you and the good people at the trademark office will enjoy.”
However, that was not his first fashion venture. In 2008, André launched Benjamin Bixby, a clothing line that featured designs from the 1940s. Unfortunately, the brand was unsuccessful, and André lost a ton of money in the process.
“I️ lost millions, to be honest,” he told W Magazine. “It was an expensive lesson. But I can tell you, it was the best times, the best lessons in my life about myself and creating things.”
André went on to praise Kanye West and Pharrell Williams for their successful fashion endeavors.
