StoryCorps, the celebrated nonprofit organization known for preserving and sharing human stories, has announced the launch of its latest initiative, "Brightness in Black." This three-year, multi-faceted project is designed to capture and amplify stories that reveal the richness, diversity, and complexity of the Black experience in America. With the support of Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand's Black Community Commitment, "Brightness in Black" aims to challenge and expand the often limited narratives surrounding Black lives.

A Multi-Year Commitment to Narrative Change

"Brightness in Black" will operate in two key Anchor Communities each year, starting with Philadelphia and Atlanta in 2024. In these regions, StoryCorps will collaborate with local media outlets and community organizations to collect stories that reflect the true diversity of Black experiences. The initiative's broader goal is to foster a long-term change in how Black narratives are shared and understood.

"We are honored to launch this important initiative with support from Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand’s Black Community Commitment," said StoryCorps CEO Sandra Clark. "For too long, Black stories have largely been depicted as one-dimensional and over-simplified. 'Brightness in Black' encourages the Black community nationwide to challenge and reclaim this narrative by sharing their personal stories of triumph, challenges, resilience, and gratitude."

Philadelphia Launch Event

The initiative will officially kick off in Philadelphia on September 14, 2024, with a launch event at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. This family-friendly event will feature live performances, community activations, and the opportunity for attendees to record their own stories in StoryCorps' mobile recording booth. Philadelphia's Poet Laureate, Kai Davis, will present an original poem, while other artists, including Seraiah Nicole, will perform throughout the day.

A Fellowship Program for Emerging Storytellers

In addition to the community events, "Brightness in Black" will introduce a year-long Fellowship Program for students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and community colleges in the Anchor Communities. This non-residential program will provide personal and professional development opportunities, with fellows facilitating interviews and working on their own storytelling projects.

Nationwide Participation

StoryCorps is inviting Black Americans across the country to participate in the "Brightness in Black" initiative by recording their stories either virtually or in person. These stories will be archived at the Library of Congress American Folklife Center, contributing to a richer and more dynamic portrayal of Black life today.
