In sports, a select few athletes transcend the boundaries of their respective arenas, emerging as forces of positive change and advocates for social justice. They leverage their immense popularity and influence to change narratives and support the less privileged and unheard. For Black athletes there is a double-edged sword of difficulty they must overcome in order to find success within their chosen field. One is the actual physical requirements needed to reach peak performance in sports such as football and basketball. Two is the unfair stereotypes and prejudice that somehow Black athletes have an unfair advantage and have not earned their ranks within the sports world.

The Guardian noted in a 2021 article about Black players in popular American sports leagues that: "Black athletes make up roughly 41% of the rosters in the five major American sports leagues. While it is true that Black athletes make up the majority of more popular professional sports such as football and basketball, when one takes into account the demographics of baseball, hockey, soccer, golf, tennis, gymnastics, and other professional sports, it becomes increasingly evident that what Black people actually dominate are the sports that they have access to."

Here is a spotlight on black athletes who excel in sports and actively use their platforms to address systemic issues and drive impactful change.
