Social media went wild when a video surfaced showing what looked like Vice President Kamala Harris partying with embattled hip-hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs. The clip, which quickly made the rounds on TikTok and Instagram, had people buzzing — some were amused, others confused.
Diddy was arrested on September 16, and charged with federal sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution (per USA Today). The arrest came months after the music mogul settled a scathing lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend, Cassie, who accused him of domestic violence, assault, and other acts of sexual violence.
Since Cassie made her claims, Diddy has faced an onslaught of legal filings from other alleged victims, that have accused him of performing violent acts.
The shocking story has birthed a renewed interest in Diddy’s past, and his connection with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Now, presidential candidate Harris is being linked to the rapper. But before the netizens get too carried away, let’s clear the air: the woman in the video isn’t Harris. Here’s what really went down.
Kamala Harris did not attend a Diddy party.
Following Diddy’s indictment, a video of the Bad Boy founder and Kamala Harris began circulating online. According to TMZ, Donald Trump helped exacerbate the viral story by reposting the photo on his Truth Social platform. The photos show Diddy and Harris at an event with the caption, "Kamala doing the Diddy?"
The internet, being the internet, didn’t waste any time speculating. People joked about seeing the vice president letting loose at a party, but some even questioned if it was real.
Within hours, the photo had gone viral. Memes popped up, and theories flew around about how Harris could be at a party with Diddy, given her position in the White House.
However, the photo is not real. The original image is of Harris and her ex-boyfriend Montel Williams at an event in 2001.
And while the photo has been proven to be fake, Trump has not addressed sharing the image. Per TMZ, the image has been removed from the former president’s Truth Social page, but he has not apologized for sharing the image.
This is not the first time Trump has come under fire for spreading misinformation. In August he shared an A.I. generated image of Taylor Swift endorsing him for president. The pop star has since formally endorsed Harris’ candidacy.
Diddy and Kamala Harris have worked together on political events.
Diddy and Kamala Harris have crossed paths before. In 2020, Harris thanked Diddy on X (formerly known as Twitter) for hosting a townhall about the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Thank you,@Diddy, for hosting this town hall last night. There’s a lot at stake for our communities right now and it’s critical we bring to the forefront how coronavirus is perpetuating racial inequality and health disparities,” Harris tweeted.
The event was held virtually, and was also attended by the Rev. Al Sharpton, Meek Mill, Big Sean, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Killer Mike. And while Harris did speak at the virtual town hall, it is unclear if the vice president and Diddy have ever met in-person.
