For a time, Drake, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj were regarded as rap music’s new “holy trinity.” The artists were signed to Cash Money’s Young Money label and regularly dropped bangers.
In 2009, the rappers released “Bedrock,” the first single from the label’s collaborative album We Are Young Money. The song was a huge success, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. However, it was not the first hit for the group.
Months prior, they released “Every Girl,” although Nicki was not featured on the single. Nonetheless, it was clear that Drake and Lil Wayne had a solid friendship during this period. Drake praised Wayne throughout the years, often referring to the “A Milli” rapper as the “GOAT” of rap music.
"My GOAT and not just on some emoji s**t,” Drake wrote alongside a photo of Weezy on Instagram (per XXL).
However, netizens have unearthed a rumor that suggests that Drake and Wayne once had a feud. Here is the truth about what really happened.
Lil Wayne and Drake’s friendship came into question over a wild rumor.
During the rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, Kendrick suggested that the former Degrassi star slept with Wayne’s girlfriend when he was in jail. The claim sent the internet into a frenzy, with many questioning what really went down behind the scenes.
Wayne previously addressed the claim in a 2016 interview with HipHollywood, and he confirmed that the messy ordeal occurred.
"Oh! I wasn’t worried about that, that’s just how life goes when you locked up,” Weezy said (per Hot New HipHop). “Now I remember, though. Yeah, he wapped. I know who he wapped though. When you in jail though, even your side side side side is your main."
Drake has never publicly addressed the incident, but the two rappers seem to have gotten past the hurdle. In 2022, Drake welcomed Wayne and Nicki Minaj to a stop on his It's All a Blur Tour and the trio performed together.
“It’s been a long time since we been here and been able to do this together,” Drake said in a video obtained by TMZ. “First and foremost, I just wanna say tonight I got to stand in the crowd and watch two of the greatest musicians of all f**king time.”
Drake and Wayne have been friends for more than a decade.
Wayne was originally introduced to Drake’s music by one of their mutual friends in 2008. He quickly reached out to the Toronto rapper, and their friendship formed in no time.
Wayne eventually signed Drake to his Young Money label, thrusting the former child star into rap glory. They went on to release a string of hits together – like “HYFR” and 2017’s “Family Feud.”
However, Drake’s relationship with the label soured in 2019, forcing him to part ways with Wayne’s conglomerate. Scorpion was the last album the “One Dance” rapper put out under Young Money/Cash Money, as he has since signed to Universal Music Group, according to Variety.
