Rapper and singer PartyNextDoor has established himself as a multi-talented force in the hip-hop industry. Known for his R&B tracks and collaborations with high-profile artists, Party’s role extends beyond his performances.
In addition to dropping hits like “Come and See Me” and “R e s e n t m e n t,” Party is also a ghostwriter for some of the biggest acts in the rap game.
PartyNextDoor's pen game has landed him in hot water
PartyNextDoor emerged from Mississauga, Ontario, and signed with Drake's OVO Sound label in 2013. His self-titled debut mixtape — released that same year — introduced his distinctive sound, a blend of R&B, hip-hop, and pop.
His subsequent releases, PartyNextDoor Two and PNDCOLOURS solidified his status as a rising star. However, his talents were not confined to his own projects. His pen has touched some of today’s most popular tracks, and it has also gotten him into trouble.
In 2017, Nicki Minaj called the rapper out on Twitter, for leading fans to believe that he wrote her song “Regret In Your Tears.”
“PartyNextDoor had nothing to do [with] 'RegretInYourTears.' N---a ain't never heard that song a day in his life. Bless y'all heart,” Nicki tweeted, later adding, “Not sure why he was 'liking' tweets. Maybe it was just 'funny' to him. Maybe he was ... 'hacked.' LOL.”
Party later suggested that there was no beef between him and the “Starships” rapper, revealing that they collaborated on a song together that was not for her album. “I’m a fan of Nicki Minaj. We have a song together, I hope she’s as cool [and] as I’ve always imagined,” Party tweeted (via Yahoo News).
PartyNextDoor has written for Rihanna, Kanye West, and Beyoncé.
Party’s pen is not to be played with, and that’s evident by his long list of writing credits. His portfolio includes chart-topping hits like Rihanna's "Work," which dominated global charts in 2016. He also wrote "Sex with Me" from the GRAMMY-winning singer’s album ANTI. The song, known for its bold lyrics and sultry vibe, showcases Party’s ability to write music from varying perspectives.
Party’s collaboration with Drake has been a significant aspect of his career. He co-wrote several tracks on Drake's 2015 mixtape If You're Reading This It's Too Late, including "Legend" and "Preach."
"Come and See Me," a track from Party’s 2016 album PartyNextDoor 3, features Drake and is another example of their successful collaborations. Additionally, Party’s songwriting credits include “Shinning” by DJ Khaled featuring Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
In an interview with Power 98 FM, Party explained that he finds it easier to write for other artists than for himself.
“I’d say it’s easier to write for other people than to write for myself,” he said. “I can go into imagination with other people. For myself, it’s more of like, I’ve gotta admit it, and I gotta tell the truth and nothing but the truth because I can’t hide that. It’s easier to write for other people. I prefer writing for myself because I like the challenge.”
