In January of 2024, 21 Savage dropped American Dream, the first solo release from the rapper since 2018’s I Am > I Was.
Much to our surprise, the rapper also announced that he is dropping a biopic — American Dream: The 21 Savage Story — to accompany the album “soon.” Here's everything we know so far about Savage’s upcoming film so far!
'American Dream: The 21 Savage Story': Here's everything we know about the cast, release date, and more.
On January 7, days before the release of his third studio album, 21 Savage took to Instagram to share a poster for a biographical film starring himself, Donald Glover, and Caleb McLaughlin.
In the poster, Donald and Caleb — who play 21 in the biopic — are sporting face tattoos reminiscent of the rapper's body art.
The music video-style film trailer starts with a young Savage (played by Caleb) having a disagreement with his mother (Gail Bean.) Savage then enters the frame and begins telling his story. As Savage raps, his life flashes before the viewer's eyes.
The upcoming project stars You actress Victoria Pedretti and Beef actor Young Mazino as 21's immigration lawyers. Viral comedian Druski also appears in the film, though it is unclear who the internet personality will be portraying.
It is still unclear whether American Dream: The 21 Savage Story will serve as a Savage biopic or just an accompaniment to the rapper’s third studio album, which dropped on January 12.
There's no word on whether or not the full-length is actually happening or when it will be released.
What will ‘American Dream: The 21 Savage Story’ be about?
21 Savage has not explicitly revealed the plot of American Dream: The 21 Savage Story, but the trailer reveals an inside look into the rapper’s immigration battle.
21, whose real name is Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, Originally from London, Savage moved to the U.S. in 2005. His Visa expired the following year.
He was eventually arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in 2018.
Savage was placed in an ICE detainment center for nine days before he was released on bond. It would take another three years for the Grammy Award winner to finalize his residency status but he ultimately became a permanent resident.
“She'yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph followed all applicable Immigration laws since his initial detention by ICE. His immigration court proceedings have now been terminated, and he is a lawful resident of the United States,” his lawyer said in a statement to PEOPLE.
Now, it appears that Savage is ready to tell his own story. The trailer for American Dream: The 21 Savage Story shows depictions of Savage’s time in London, his upbringing in Atlanta, and his immigration battle.
