In a conversation with The View, Jon shared that he did not consider music as a first career choice until he was well into his teens.
"There was music for everything, you know, there was music for all occasions, and it wasn't a profession," Jon said. "It wasn't a thing that I thought of as a profession to go into until I was about 14 or 15 and I started to get pretty good at it, and folks were telling me, 'You know, you could go and make some money doing that, youngster,' and then I started really doing it."

"By the time I was 17, and I was at Julliard and studying music in New York, that's when it really hit me that there was a lot of opportunity for me in a great big world out there, so I went, and I did my thing, and the rest is history," the musician added.
