Charges Filed After POORSTACY’s Death — What Police Say Happened

Florida rapper POORSTACY died on Nov. 29 at 26. Now the mother of his child is facing criminal charges stemming from his final hours inside a Boca Raton motel room.

POORSTACY, whose real name is Carlito Junior Milfort, came up as part of the SoundCloud generation. He dropped two studio albums — The Breakfast Club and Party at the Cemetery — plus EPs like I Don’t Care and I Don’t Rap. His song “Don’t Look at Me” became a fan favorite, and he later linked up with Travis Barker on tracks like “Choose Life,” “Nothing Left,” and “Hills Have Eyes.”

After his death, prosecutors filed charges against the mother of his child. Here’s what we know so far about why POORSTACY’s “baby mama” was arrested and what police say happened that night.

Hours after news broke that POORSTACY died following an incident at a Boca Raton motel, police arrested the mother of his child. Court records identify her as 28-year-old Nicole Grikstas. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Complex, Boca Raton police charged Nicole with felony child neglect without causing great bodily harm.

Investigators say the charge stems from what allegedly went on in that motel room before POORSTACY’s death. Police say Nicole told them she and POORSTACY checked into a Boca Raton motel with their toddler about a week earlier. During that time, she reportedly admitted they used cocaine, Xanax and MDMA while the child was present in the room.

Officers say neither adult took steps to remove the child from that environment. Investigators reported the presence of drugs, a firearm, and violent threats in the room while the toddler was present. Police say that failure to protect the child forms the basis of the neglect charge.

Detectives determined that the toddler was kept “unprotected” in an environment with heavy drug use and escalating violence and that at no point did the adults remove the child from danger. Police arrested Nicole on Dec. 3.

When the story first broke, the Boca Raton Police Department said POORSTACY died after an “incident” at a local hotel. TMZ later reported that the rapper died by suicide, saying investigators believe he shot himself in a hotel room. Those sources told TMZ he initially survived the shooting, was rushed to a hospital, and later died after being taken off life support.

Nicole told police POORSTACY became convinced she was hiding his drugs. According to the affidavit, she said he forcibly searched her vaginal and anal areas and hit her while trying to find them. For about an hour, she claimed he waved a gun around, threatening to shoot her and pointing it at himself and at her. At some point, she said, he pulled the trigger and shot himself, with their toddler still in the room.
