In the early 2010s, A$AP Mob ruled the Harlem music scene.
Formed in 2006 by A$AP Yams (Steven Rodriguez), A$AP Bari (Jabari Shelton), and A$AP Illz (Illijah Nicholson), the collective quickly expanded to include rappers A$AP Rocky (Rakim Mayers), A$AP Ferg (Darold Durard Brown Ferguson Jr.), and A$AP Twelvyy (Jamal Phillips).
Together, the group became synonymous with innovation, style, and boundary-pushing artistry. Members of A$AP Mob are now prominent figures in both fashion and music.
Rocky has since become the most famous member of the group, and he praises A$AP Mob for their culture-shifting creativity.
“Plans for the Mob is just to be creative too,” Rocky told Acclaim. “We’ve got A$AP Ferg, A$AP Twelvyy, A$AP Nast — they all coming up next. Honestly their stuff is just as good as mine, so I feel like people don’t really appreciate what the A$AP Mob has to offer for 2013 and beyond.”
However, there has been a shift in the mob. Ferg has made a huge life transition and seems to be distancing himself from the group. Now, fans are wondering if Rocky and Ferg are still friends.
The drama between A$AP Mob members started in 2020.
Rumors of A$AP Mob’s split started rumbling in 2020, after A$AP Illz made a shocking announcement on X (formerly known as Twitter.)
“Ferg ain't ASAP no more. Sorry, guys. That n***a burnt out, songs dumb trash. Mr anthem can’t get right,” Illz wrote (via Rap-Up). The tweet came out of nowhere, leaving fans confused about the state of the group.
However, A$AP Nast settled those fears, emphasizing that Ferg did not leave the mob. “The Trap Lord was not and will not be kicked out of A$AP — false news, everybody go home now #ASAPforever” Nast tweeted.
Ferg later addressed the controversy in an interview with Ebro in the Morning, explaining that Illz tweeted his remarks out of anger – calling the comments, “petty.” Ultimately, Ferg continued his association with the collective.
“I am the A$AP Mob,” Ferg told Ebro. “Who’s been waving this flag for the past couple years? You can’t spell A$AP without saying A$AP Ferg.”
A$AP Ferg changed his name, but he’s still friend with A$AP Rocky
On May 13, Ferg dropped his new single “MDMX,” and fans immediately took notice of how the song was billed. Ferg dropped “A$AP” from his public moniker. This caused a frenzy among A$AP Mob fans, with many suggesting that Ferg was formally kicked out of the hip-hop collective.
“Couple things I noticed — he dropped A$AP from his name, no A$AP Mob tagging or artwork throughout the video, no members either. Bro said f**k them n***as?” one fan tweeted.
However, that is not the case. On May 9, Ferg and Rocky reunited, proving that their bond is just as strong as ever.
In a clip shared online, the rappers are seen sitting together in a car, jamming out to new music. The unreleased song in the video appears to be a collaboration between the two, but that has not been confirmed.
