Canadian-born entertainer Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, popularly known as Tory Lanez, made his big music industry debut in 2016 with his album "I Told You," which caught the attention of fans and made him an artist to watch.

His distinct fusion of hip-hop and R&B was both unique and intriguing and helped him garner a fan base.

Recently, Tory has been in the headlines for his altercation with Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020, which has sparked intrigue and speculation about his family, who has been by his side through thick and thin.

Tory's father, Sonstar Peterson, has a religious background

Tory was raised by his father, Sonstar Peterson, who reportedly raised all his children in the Christian faith. Beyond being the proud father of a well-known artist, Sonstar has multiple talents, including being an ordained minister, missionary, author, and businessman.

He also wrote a book called The Destiny of the Black Race.

In an interview with NME, Tory talked about how powerful his father's spiritual inclination was, and how much of an influence he was on his early years.

“I’ve seen him literally heal people through prayer,” Tory said. “I’ve seen people who couldn’t walk get up and start walking, through prayer. Words are so powerful. Death and life is in the power of your tongue.”

Tory's mom died of a rare disease when he was young

According to reports, Tory's mother Luella Peterson died of a rare disease triggered by the complications of anaemia. After his mother's death, Tory was struggling with grief, and that ultimately affected his schooling and pushed him into pursuing music full-time.

After Tory was sentenced for shooting and wounding renowned rapper Megan Thee Stallion, his father, Sonstar, spoke out about the loss of Luella while advocating for his son outside the courthouse.

At the time, he also spoke about the death of Tory's mother, who passed away when he was 11 years old, and the impact it had on him at the time.

“I don’t think anybody ever gets over that,” Sonstar said. “But his music became his outlet.”

Tory has a 6-year-old son named Kai'Lon.

Back in 2017, Tory welcomed his first and only child Kai'Lon into the world, whom he welcomed with his now-wife, Raina Chassagne. According to Black Enterprise, Tory and Raina got married following his 10-year sentence, and "the marriage is part of Lanez’s motion to be released on bail."

Tory has three siblings.

According to reports, Tory was born into a family of four children and has three siblings. Two of his younger siblings were from his father's second marriage.

One of Tory's siblings, who goes by the name Yoko Gold, is also an artist and has collaborated on several projects with his brother.

After Tory's sentencing, he took to Instagram to write, "I will not be worried. I will not be afraid. Instead, I surrender my will to God's purpose and pray for better days."
