Romantic relationships are complex one size does not fit all — and this is especially true when it comes to monogamy. For many, polyamory is the wave.
By definition, polyamory is an open relationship where different variations are acceptable and consented to. The number and gender of the partners can vary as long as all participants are aware of who is involved.
Many musicians embrace the lifestyle of open relationships and polyamory despite controversy. Read on for six fan-favorite rappers who practice consensual non-monogamy!
Finesse2Tymes
In the past, one girlfriend was not enough for rapper Finesse2Tymes. Today, he claims to be a one-woman man, but in 2023, he got two of his girlfriends pregnant at the same time.
During the Lip Service interview, Finesse2Tymes opened up about his relationship status:
“I'm in a polygamous relationship I like, I got to have more than one woman. We stay together, three women. I’m not going to lie two of them I just threw it on them…I accept what comes with you and you accept what comes with me.”
Will Smith
When it comes to Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, their relationship status keeps us scratching our heads. That said, it works for them.
In an interview with GQ, he shared that Jada never believed in traditional relationships. She even had family members model unconventional relationships at the time — hence her well-known entanglement with crooner August Alsina.
"We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way," the rapper-turned-actor said at the time. "And marriage for us can't be a prison. And I don't suggest our road to anybody. I don't suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we've given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love."
Nick Cannon
Nick Cannon and us all fooled during his relationship with superstar Mariah Carey, with whom he fathered two kids. Their seemingly happy marriage made us believe he was monogamous.
However, 10 children later, it is clear that Cannon has an unconventional approach to love. At times, multiple mothers of his children were even expecting at the same time.
That said, the arrangement appears to be harmonious.
Fredo
Rapper Fredo Bang was able to use non-monogamy to embrace a part of life he never thought he would: fatherhood. He entered a relationship with a same-sex couple, helping them to conceive their son.
As far as putting a label on their relationship, the throuple declined to categorize the arrangement. But seem pretty happy.
“I was able to bring life into the world with two women that were already the best mothers to their first son," Fredo said in a since-deleted post (via The Shade Room.) "It was the best decision I could’ve made.”
Diddy
Even at Diddy’s big age, he is out in the world embracing the playboy lifestyle. Notably having a fun relationship with City Girl Yung Miami while welcoming a newborn, the arrangement between him and his love interests seems to work for them.
Yung Miami said that she sees other people outside of her situationship with Diddy as well.
Jidenna
Artist Jidenna has been turning heads with his relationship history and is no stranger to embracing polyamory.
The "Bambi" singer said in a viral video: “I believe that most of us are out here dating and if you’re not in like an exclusive partnership with someone then its like kind of a form of polyamory. It’s just not as explicitly put.”
Though one of the main components of being in an open relationship or being polyamorous is explicitly stating such…I think we get the gist of what he is trying to say.
